Chopin Thesis

Thesis #1
Chopin’s theme about women’s struggles during this time is described through the setting and the imagery Chopin uses.  Since women struggled with their own rights, especially while married; during this time Mrs. Mallard feels a sense of freedom and looks at life with a new and clear view.  As she is staring outside of her window she notices “the delicious breath of rain in the air. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves.”

Thesis #2
Chopin uses societal pressures to portray Mrs. Mallard’s physical and mental condition during this story. One major societal pressure of a woman is to have children. As a widow she states “there would be no one to live for..” The fact that children are absent in this story portrays Mrs. Mallard as a failure to society by not bearing children.
